Location

Aguascalientes City

LOCATION OF AGUASCALIENTES STATE:
Aguascalientes is one of the smallest states of Mexico. It is located in the geographical center of the Mexican Republic, in the southern part of North America, and is situated between the states of Jalisco and Zacatecas. It stands on the banks of the Río Aguascalientes, 1888 meters above sea level, at 21°51′N, 102°18′W The state capital is the city of Aguascalientes which is situated in the part south of the state. This city is considered, by its locals, to be one of the safest and cleanest in Mexico. Aguascalientes is a land of warm and welcoming people that will receive you with open arms, making you feel at home.

SUGGESTION AND REMARK

Weather:
In general, Aguascalientes is dry and semi-arid with thicket xerophilous. The climate is cold in the high areas of the Sierra region and cool on the valley of Aguasalientes. The temperature is generally pleasant, and is often fairly warm during all year. Although the main winds come from the southwest, cold winds sometimes blow down from the north. Morning and evening are often sunny, dry and cold. At noon is warm at the end of fall and winter, rain is unlikely therefore a sweater is recommended on the month of October.

Gastronomy:
Being in a rich livestock raising area, the food of Aguascalientes and bordering regions concentrates heavily on meats. Typical dishes include barbecued and stewed mutton, (steamed lamb meat in its own juice), pozole (meat stew with corn having plenty of broth), baked suckling pig, and the well-known Saint Mark's Chicken. Aguascalientes boasts of it's own style of mole and regional dishes such as nopales (prickly pear cactus) with beans, and tasty enchiladas rojas (enchiladas in red sauce). Aguascalientes is also a strong producer of grapes, guava. The wine, brandy, sweet liqueurs, as well as sweets are made of locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Lately, the prickeld fruit, pumpkin, biznaga (candied cactus), and chilacayote are prepared as natural sweet candies.

Arts and Crafts:
The main arts and crafts as table clothes, napkins, sheets, bedspreads, blouses, skirts, sweaters, heavy shawls, and jorongos are embroidered by hand and also in embroideress; as well as they are elaborated with needlework. Likewise, the pottery is also produced in the state of Aguascalientes.

Taxis:
There are enough taxis available around Aguascalientes city, They have price devices (taximeter) and they do not give a receipt. They are safe and do not expect a tip. The taxi are all red and numbered on the door and back with white letters.

Currency:
The official currency of Mexican peso is about 1 US dollar around 12 mexican pesos and 1 Euro around 16 mexican pesos. A Dollar and Euro are generally changed in a bank or money exchange offices. All banks are operated electronically during 24 hours through ATM. Inside the campus university there is a Bancomer ATM where you can check and get money. There is a Bank office in front of Campus and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

First Aids:
Will be available during the symposium. In case of medical assistance, the university has a clinic on the corner of the Ave Aguacalientes (Second ring). In front of Samborns Store.

Electricity:
The domestic supply is 110 volts. Those people who bring their labtop take in to account to bring the appropriate adaptor. The electrical contact points are similar to USA.

We have developed acute toxicity tests with the cladoceran Daphnia magna Strauss to study metal toxicity in sediments collected along the San Pedro River in Aguascalientes, Mexico. We identified several metals in the sediments corresponding to an important part of the total toxicity of the sample. Lead was the most abundant metal presented in the samples followed by Cadmium and Iron. Lead concentrations ranged from 2.35 to 2.45 mg/Kg of sediment. Lead toxicity was estimated to represent between 15 to 23% of total toxicity followed by cadmium (4 to 5%) and iron (2 to 3%). This study constitutes a preliminary approach to estimating the contribution of each metal to the total toxicity of sediments in the samples.

Key words: sediment, metal toxicity, lethal effects, cladocera

Hydrobiologia

Hydrobiologia Papers:

As tradition, the proceedings of the VIII International Symposium on Cladocera will be considered for publication in a special issue of Hydrobiologia.
The Guest Editor(s) accepts to edit a special volume or part-thereof, provisionally entitled Cladocera VIII, hereinafter referred to as ‘the Work’, for the journal Hydrobiologia, to be delivered, in one package, on or before 1 November 2009.
Should delivery of the manuscript be delayed by more than 6 (six) months, consultation will take place between the Guest Editor, the Editor-in-Chief and the Publisher with a view to deciding whether new circumstances have arisen which might tend to affect adversely the scientific quality of the work.
    1. The scientific contents consist of an edited and refereed collection of papers, for which the authors have been invited to submit by the Guest Editor(s). The choice of referees, the referee process, final selection of papers and the linguistic quality are
the responsibility of the Guest Editor(s).The final scientific quality of the Work is the responsibility of the Guest Editor(s) and the Editor-in-Chief.
    2. The Work will have a size of approximately 300 pages. Works greater than this size must be approved by the Publisher. After the Guest Editor(s) has completed the editorial work, he/she should submit, in one package, to the Editor-in-Chief of Hydrobiologia:
    - electronic copy of the manuscripts including figures
    - electronic copy of the Preface; sequence of papers; title page; section headings, if applicable; and names and affiliations of Guest Editor(s) and authors.
    - Manuscript Transmittal forms, indicating the corresponding author (notably, for
submissions with more than one author, the author with whom we should
    correspond)
    - referee reports
    - signed Consent to Publish form for each contribution
    - photograph to be used for cover (full colour, portrait size, minimum 300 dpi)
    3. The Work will be typeset by the Publisher. Proofs will be mailed to the correspondent author and Guest Editor(s) for proofreading. The correspondent author is requested to return the corrected proofs to the desk editor for finalization. In general, the technical procedure takes approximately 5 months, depending on the prompt return of proofs
by the correspondent author. It is important that the authors follow instructions carefully, as printed in every volume of the journal and on the journal’s website. The Publisher will decide the publication schedule of the Work.
Please note that black and white figures are reproduced free of charge. Colour figures are published at the author’s expense. Please contact the Publisher for a price list.
    4. There are no financial obligations, no page charge, and no honorarium. Herewith, a prepublication order of a minimum of - journal volumes has been placed. Prepublication order to be discussed at a later stage
    5. Authors are provided with 50 free offprints. In the case of more than one author per paper, the offprints will be sent to the correspondent author. Additional offprints may be bought from the Publisher at the standard rates for the journal.
    6. The Guest Editor(s) will receive a total of four free copies of the special volume, upon publication.
    7. Special conditions: none.
    8. The copyright of the published Work is owned by the Publisher and it has the imprint of Springer, Dordrecht, The Netherlands.
    9. Final acceptance of the Work and its individual contributions, upon delivery to the Publisher, is subject to the approval by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

Description

Description of Cladocera

Cladocera

Cladocerans or water fleas, are a group of small animals (from 0.230-18.0 mm). They have a single central compound eye as adults and possess a carapace that is used as a brood chamber. In most species, the carapace wraps around the entire body except for the head. The four to six pairs of thoracic legs are generally covered by a transparent clear to yellow carapace. The large, paired appendages used for swimming are second antennae. And the first pair of antennae are often called antennules, and the second pair are termed antennae.
